98 1.8t loud valve noise

Default 98 1.8t loud valve noise

I have a 98 a4 with 1.8 and their is a loud valve noise at startup. As it starts and the oil starts pumping it seems to get better, but there is a very noticeable ticking noise at idle. If I increase rpms or when driving its much less noticeable until 3k rpm's. At 3k it starts to make it quite louder and (obviously) at a much faster rate. Any Ideas? I am hoping it is just a spring or retainer. I do not want to have to take the whole top end off for a valve job. Is a compression test the best way to tell if a valve is bent? Should this be my first step? HELP! thanks!

What kind of oil? When was it last changed? Have you checked the cam chain tensioner guides?

You do not have a bent valve or broken spring.

I run mobil one 0-30? someone told me that it would be a little better. but I ran 5-30 before with pretty much same results. I should have noted that I recently had to replace the oil pan (due to overtightening of the oil drain plug. not done by myself)It was drained of oil and sat for 3-4 weeks w/o oil before I replaced the pan. What should I look for when I remove the valve cover? IE how much slack should I have in the tensioner? Thanks for the advice about the valve. puts me at ease a bit. Any more suggestions would be appreciated!

how many miles have you put on it since it sat so long? Lifters can take a good drive to pump back up. If its no better, i would really suggest removing the valve cover and checking the tensioner shoes.

Is it possible that the oil pump lost it's prime?
Do you have oil pressure?

I would definitely pull the valve cover and inspect the cam chain tensioner guides like Driver said.

Its very simple to do and you could potentially spot the issue.

If the guides are no longer intact you'll have to pull the pain as I'm sure they have made there way back to the bottom of the pain.

There could also be pieces still scattered about the head.

thats not possible. With the engine off and full of oil, the pump is submerged in oil.

Except that the oil pan was off the car for several weeks.

when I pulled the oil pan I inspected the oil pump and it appeared to be clean. so I opted to leave it partly because the part had to ordered and I was kinda on a time crunch. The oil pres. light flashes intermittently after the car has warmed up and only when driving. at idle pressure seems ok and light never comes on. I will pull valve cover and inspect the tensioner guides (hopefully this weekend). Thanks for all the advice! This site is awesome. I will post updates as they develop

So it sounds like the pump has not lost its prime, but is probably bad.
