A4 Brake Problem

Audi warns of possible brake problems in A4 model INGOLSTADT, Germany (AFX) -- Audi AG warned drivers of its A4 model that they may encounter brake problems due to salt on roads.Audi has received about 60 complaints from Germany since Christmas, Udo Ruegheimer, an Audi spokesman said.The salt leaves a "sticky residue" on the brakes which prevents them from functioning properly when they are not used for long periods of time -- when exiting a garage, or after lengthy travel on highways -- he said.The residue is eliminated once the brakes are used, he said.He said no accidents have been reported to date as a result of the malfunction.

Hmmm........

Now would this explain the "poor braking performance" when it's wet out? Is it possible that the performance is a result of the salt that's in the water and not the water itself? Any ideas?-Ash 98.5 1.8TQMS

Well, . . .

It's very wet today in NE texas, and I noticed a drop in brake performance over the course of my 11 mi drive to work. I'm quite sure there's no salt on the roads down here, so I don't think this is the reason. Honestly, I was very disappointed. The brakes were there when I used a lot of pressure, but the fine control I am accustomed to was not there when using light pressure.Darryl 98.5 1.8T qmsb

Occasionally I have noticed reduced braking performance, when I have my 17" rims installed and it is raining. I have not experienced this problem with the stock 15" rims which I mount in the winter time (Thanksgiving to Memorial Day).Could this be the larger rims allow moisture to reach the brake pads????? and affect their stopping characteristics

This bulletin is due to SALT on the roads, NOT rain...

Braking of of course affected by water. Any brakes will be affected because it interferes with the contact between the pad and the rotor.This particular bulletin warns about SALT on the roads. Like when salt is used to reduce the amount of ice/snow on the roads. I'd expect people in the NorthEast or Midwest, or Colorado, or Canada to be experiencing these kinds of problems...-Phil
