A4 cold start problems
I have a 2000 A4 turbo quattro with 110000 miles. When I start it in the morning, it runs rough for about 60 seconds,idle is spiking up and down to keep the car running, then it is relatively smooth after that. Although, until the car gets really warmed up, there is a significant lag in acceleration, typically from stopped positions, but not exclusively. Also, when the car is first started, there is a steady, high pitched noise which accompanies the rough idling. This sound stops when the car begins to idle normally. Now, occasionally when the temp outside reaches below 20 or so, the car idles normally when started but the acceleration problems persist and tend to stick with the car longer, due to the increased warm up period as the result of the colder temps. Any ideas?

It sounds like the same problem i was having which turned out to be the Secondary Air Pump. Does...
the sound come from the passenger side front of the engine, if so this is your problem and very common. The pump literally splits were it is riveted. Replaced mine and have not had the problems.
