Default A4 Impression...

Hi all!
Last week I had the chance to drive my sister's A4 30V (we traded cars for a week). Now I can understand why A4s are so popular... and even have an entire website devoted to A4. The car is very well built and good looking, but somehow I feel that it's not as sporty as many magazines suggest. It seems like the car is not meant to be driven hard (maybe the 1.8T feels better?). The steering and the gas paddle are both a little too light for me. Especially the steering, its response is more sensitive than what I am used to. I also feel that the car can use a little more power by maybe changing the chip, but my sister has no interest in modifying her car since she's not at all performance-oriented. Anyway I think Audi has built a wonderful car, and it's great to be able to communicate with so many A4 fans on the internet!

S Chen: Good observations; after several months of ownership I still have the same impressions when driving the A4. (I have a 1.8t)

Default You get used to light steering and accelerator pedal

I actually prefer the light feel to the accelerator pedal now. I still don't like the light steering but I've gotten comfortable with it. I got the same first impressions as you did but it changes once you get comfortbale with the car.
The 2.8 manual with sport is meant to be driven hard. You just have to keep it in the power band (3 to 4k RPMS) and it will go when you hit the gas. I find myself looking forward to every front position at a stop light and to every turn. It has a great launch with the quattro and the combination of quattro, sport suspension, and SP8000 tires make for some fun cornering. I can't make myself drive this car easy, much to my girlfriends displeasure. She's going to wear out the hand grips.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS)
Default All depends on what you're used to

I jumped from a Coupe Quattro to my Avant (30V wy, 3 pedals on floor, Sport susp. and seats); for a daily driver I find it extremely sporting - noticeably quicker and better handling than Coupe. Controls are a little lighter, but have gotten used to them.
Personally, I do not think a chip will get you that much on a normally aspirated car. It might feel sportier, but I would bet if you run accelleration tests would not be really different. I proved this to myself on my old '84 Porsche Carrera; did 3rd gear accelleration tests from 3000-6000 RPM on 4 separate chips; didn't get a noticeable difference from stock.

I am more used to the pedal feel of Mercedes and BMW cars. I think my Mercedes has the heaviest padel of these three German brands, but I feel like I have more control over the car's speed with a heavier pedal. A fair comparion would be to compare my sister's A4 to a 94 BMW 325i, a car which I used to own for a couple years. The 325 felt quicker than the A4 despite having less hp. Maybe I was expecting better acceleration from a 190hp car. By the way, how much power did you gain from the chip?
