Default A4 ordering process

I am planning on getting an A4 in October, and this being my first new car, I have a few questions. Since I will be in training for 3 months for a new job, I thought I would order my A4 to get exactly what I want, and have it ready when the training is done around January. Is this a reasonable expectation?
Also, on the ordering process itself... Does one negoiate the price of the car when it is ordered, and sign papers, etc, or does one tell the dealer what he wants, then put down a deposit? I worry if the latter is the case, since the dealer will have the car I ordered and need, a nonrefundable? deposit, and me drooling at the car, putting me in a bad bargining position. How have you folks gotten around this?
Thanks!
Pat

Default What part of the country are you in (more)

Recently did about the same through Sunset Imports in Beaverton/Portland, OR. I figured for $30K I was going to get what I wanted mechanically and the wife cold choose the color (see my adjacent post). Sunset works pretty hard and fast on $1000 off MSRP--not sure how this figures as far as % invoice, but it was very professional and entirely hassle free. $1K deposit, purchase order in hand, financing finalized upon arival.

I share your questions. Since ordering now will deliver a y2k model, will I be agreeing to a price
for a 99.5 and getting the extra features of the y2k for no more money??

1) Biggest problem with your ordering desire is how accurate do you have to be on delivery date? if your tolerance is 1-2 days only, you've got problems. if you don't have a problem getting it within a couple of weeks either way of desired date, you're probably OK. I have seem delivery times vary form a couple of weeks to prob. 6 months, and don't know a way of predicting what to expect.
2)All agreements on price should be done at the time of the order. At that time you should get a sales agreement specifying way you are ordering the car and what is the agreed-upon payment due upon its arrival. You will prob. have to put down a deposit of several hundred $$$.

Default But $1000 off current 99.5 MSRP, or Y2K MSRP when your car arrives?

Default A few thoughts.....

Ordering to get exactly what you want, especially for your first new car, is definitely the way to go.
Given experiences with ordered cars on this board, it's a good idea not to be too optimistic about a promised delivery date. Dealers don't have influence over production or delivery, so tell the dealer to be realistic when they tell you a date. And don't get rid of your old car until you have the new one.
Absolutely negotiate the price at the time you order and have the signed order with all of the specifics about the car listed. Check and double check everything. Although the deposit may be, technically, be non-refundable, dealers do return deposits under certain circumstances. If they view the car you ordered as difficult to sell (like a yellow, 1.8 tip, cloth seats, no sunroof), you won't get it back.
HTH
John
99.5 1.8tqms

Default What about a trade in?

If the agreement is signed when the order is placed, how do you agree on a price for your trade in if you don't hand it over until the A4 arrives? Is the trade in a separate deal that has to be worked out when delivery is made? Is there an estimate made for your trade at the time of the order? Thanks.

Default Car is a 99.5; dealer says don't expect Y2Ks until October or so (more)

Car was not ordered, but located from production availability. The dealer at Sunset Imports, Beaverton, OR has been very up-front. Sales order has VIN, build date was 5/27, I put deposit down 6/1, should have shipped 6/6 (evidently one boat per week), ETA San Diego 6/30, ETA Portland 6/15. Boards like this seem to get the word out on good dealers (Sunset, so far), keep the borderline ones honest, and alert the public to the boneheads. Good stuff!

Yes, they will figure out trade in value at time of trade in. At time of order, the cost of your new car is agreed upon.
