Default a4 question

I know you have all heard this before, but I'm new here so any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm interested in replacing my 95 GTI VR6 with an A4. I'm just wondering if there are any pitfalls in buying an A4, are there things that I should avoid?, are there better years than others? are there any years I should avoid? should I buy an 1.8t or 2.8.? I will definetly be looking for a quattro version. Any other important info I would need to make an informed purchase would be greatly appreciated.

Default Here's a few pitfalls of owning an A4...

You'll get a nasty case of the mod bug and it's only aggravated by AW. You'll never recover.

You wife or girlfriend will leave you because you'll spend more time with you fellow AW'ers and your car than them.

You'll never see the inside of your wallet full of cash anymore.

You'll get fired from work because you get more done on AW than actual work.

Other than that, 10386 miles, smiles, and woohoos!

Default The difference between 12v and 30v...

The 12v has around 172Hp and the 30v as 190HP and 207lbs torque (not sure of torque rating on 12v). I'm not sure about any mechanical problems for the 12v. I have a 30v 2.8 and love it. Smooth power, no mods needed. Of course if you want to mod like 99.99999% of AW's do, go with a 1.8T.

Default No problems with my '96 or '97 2.8L 12Vs. Mods......

Mod-wise, the 2.8L 12V and 30V are very limited, especially the 12V.

You can supercharge the 30V for about $5K. That will get you to about 295hp (305 w/ exhaust upgrade). There is a chip which gets a little more than piece of mind (+10-15hp). Of course brakes, suspension, exhaust, rims, and filter are options too.

There are some expensive mods ($5K) for the 12V which will get you maybe ?225hp?, but IMO, not worth it for what you get. I don't know all the work involved, but it is well beyond "bolt-on" components. The Hitachi ECU is not friendly to mods, so there is no chip available currently, and there likely won't be. Basically "bolt-on" performance mods for the 12V are limited to brakes, suspension, exhaust, rims, and hi-flow filter.

I have a 97 12V. The main diff between it and the 30V is 18 valves and all that it brings, both plus and minus. The 12V has been around for ages and is very reliable plus a lot of technicians are very familiar with it outside of the dealer environment. Consumer Reports, for what its worth, shows the 97 12V as having the least problem areas. I have not had the problems raised in this forum that crop up occasionly on thi engine. Downside...no mods outside of suspension at a reasonable cost. Upside...silky smooth and quattro. You may not like the 1.8 as I see you have a VR6, it is a 4 banger. You are aware of the differences in the VW engines, its the same here. They each have their virtues but drive em both and decide. You will love either Audi, take it from a Rabbit, early Scirocco,85 GLI,87 GTI 16V,and still 91 GLI 16V owner.
