ABS Dramatic failure?

My 1998 A4 Quattro 5 speed began bucking down the highway on Tuesday as the Check engine, ABS, and Brake warning lights flashed on the dash. The brakes were applying themselves lightly as I traveled at about 70 mph, not a pleasant feeling. After I pulled off to the side, the problem ceased after about 5 seconds. I decide to get back on and give it another shot, but the problem started back up again. Once I got off the highway for good and headed for my trusty European car mechanic the problem was no where to be found.

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? I have heard that the ABS module is a very common part to go crazy on these cars.
