Default accelerator stuck while driving

The other night while driving on a highway, my accelerator suddenly became stuck in my 1999 A4 2.8 automatic. After finally getting the car to stop, I checked the pedal and it appeared to be working fine. Outside tempatures have been unusually cold in our area (12 F), but has anyone else experienced this problem?

Default Might need a new throttle cable...

check to make sure the floormats aren't causing the issue first. Make sure the floor mats are clear of the pedal.

Default You sure you didn't accidentally activate the cruise control which might have retained an old

setting?

The only time I had a pedal stuck was when I was driving with my Nike flipflops, and it gut stuck between the pedal and the carpet

Other than that, I can't think of any mechanical way for it to be stuck, unless there is some sort of malfunction on your cruise control, which I don't think anyone here reported yet. You can check the cruise control module with a VAG tool just in case.

Default unless he has modified floormats, Audi started securing floormats because of this unintended

acceleration claim back in the 80's. Hence out of most cars available, Audi and a few german makes are the only ones with snaps on the floormats

Default This used to happen to me with my first car...

a 1985 Mercury Cougar. When it would get cold the throttle would stick. I had to shut the car off, pop the hood, wiggle the throttle and then it would be ok for a little while. I hated that car...

Default Happened to me (more inside)

It happaned to me in my old Yugo. The accelerator pedal was almost always pushed to the floor for obvious reasons (1.1 litre). So eventually it wore a groove in to the floor mat. The carpet was all worn away exposing the sticky rubberish material underneath. If you pushed really hard the pedal would stick to the floor. Kinda like a low budget cruise control but REALLY scary, especially if it happened as you were switching gears. Luckily I only drive that car on weekends now.

Default Not everyone uses Audi Certified Safety Floormats...

especially in the winter...a lot of people use Non-Certified Floormats (bad!). Those typically don't have the snap tabs. Also, if they were recently vacuuming the car, it's possible that they accidentally worked one of the snap tabs loose, allowing the Audi Certified Safety Floormats to move enough that it could jam the accelerator pedal.

Anyway, that and the cruise control are obvious things that should be checked before replacing parts like the throttle cable.
