Adding a CD to a '97
I've just bought a 97 A4 2.8Q - fabulous car but no CD and I can't get consistent answers about how easy (or hard) it is to add a trunk CD to the standard (not Bose) stereo. I'm told that the 96-97 A4s have head units that aren't compatible with most CD players (other than Audi's own incredbly expensive CD Player). Is this true? 98's and newer apparently have a simpler and more flexible system. Sure, I can put a new head unit in, but it won't look integrated and may mess up the whole display unit circuitry by the tach/speedo. Any thoughts?

1) yes, the cd changer that goes in the 97 A4 is different than the newer cd changers that appear in the 98.5+ cars. we have what is commonly called the Delta head unit, so you need a changer compatible with it
2) yes, the changer is ridiculously expensive. You may have better luck contacting some part suppliers. ClairParts carries them usually, so you may want to ask them. Check the audiworld classifieds as well.
3) yes, it is totally simple to do, nothing more than bolting the bracket, checking the transportation screws, and finding the cable in the trunk. The process is well documents in the FAQ for help. Some people have complained that the new brackets available don't quite fit the 97 a4. I myself had a tough time with the brackets too when I bought mine a couple years ago, so I can imagine the whole bracket nonsense may have gotten worse.

I had the same problem with my 97. I finally went with the Kenwood 715S with MASK and it looks real nice. The lights are red so that it matches with the dash at night. But i don't think you can run the speakers off another deck because I think the factory speakers have a lower impedence...maybe 2 ohms or something. This will most likely fry your new deck.
