Default Aftermarket Bosch Starter Motor

Hey Guys,
First post on here but i've been a member since i got my 1996 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 Manual a few months ago. I just recently replaced the ignitions switch, starter, and alternator this past weekend. I am unable to start it. I dont hear anything coming from the starter. I have full power from my battery..everything electronic turns on. Will not jumpstart.

I'm pretty sure its the issue of power getting to the solenoid on the starter. There are two wires connected to the starter. 1). Ground wire 2). the solenoid wire clip. One thing i noticed is that the aftermarker starter I purchased from autozone had 3 different spots on the solenoid to put the solenoid wire clip. The clip on fit on one of them so i made the assuption that that was the correct one. Still not sure what the other two are for and why the car is not started. Feedback would be great.

Thanks Guys.

Starter motors typically have a large Positive cable directly from the battery, and a small wire to power the solenoid's coil. Make sure the 12V is at the terminal of the large cable first, using a test light or meter. If there's power there, then clip a test light between the terminal of the small wire, and ground. The light should come on when you turn the key. If no light, there is some break in the circuit from the ignition key.

You can always check the starter by connecting a jumper wire from the small wire terminal on the solenoid, and the battery + post.

Thanks for the Info!

Take a look at the following solenoid. This is what mine looks like... On the left terminal a wire is nutted down going directly to the starter. The terminal on the right i have a what i beleive to be-- a ground wire. Now for the 3 clips this is what i was tryin to explain in my first message. The wire clip i have on the Top one (one that says 23 carlb next to it). The other two are too big to put the wire clip on...

Hope that makes sense. Could someone tell me if i have this wired correctly or if i'm missing something.

The starter grounds to the block. As was mentioned, your "ground" wire should be power direct from the battery.

Assuming the big wire going to the starter is at 6 0'clock and your "ground" wire is at 12, the small trigger wire should be at 9. Your "ground" wire should be hot all the time and the trigger wire should be hot when the key is in the "start" position.

Thanks for the reply... from what you are saying I have it wired correctly. (big wire going to the starter at 12, ground wire at 6, and the trigger wire at 9- on the single prong side) My question is what are the two other prongs for at "3 o clock"?

Also is it possible that the wires that I have connected to the alternator and starter could have been unplugged from the battery?

There is no ground wire. The 6 0'clock wire is solenoid output to starter. Is is hot when the solenoid is energized.

You need to get out a test light and do some testing.
Is the big 12 o'clock wire hot all the time?
Do you get power at 9 o'clock wire when the key is turned to start?

Thanks guys for the help! I tested both the posivte wire and the solenoid clip wire and both were good. I pulled the starter out and brought it back to autozone. They tested it and it was bonk. I exchanged it for a new one and the car started flawlessly.

One quick question I have is where the hell does the oil dip stick go? I found the mounting spot on the left side of the upper engine, but I cannot located where the bottom of the dipstick goes into the block.. Help would be great!

Thanks again.

Autozone? No surprise. Their track record with starters and alternators is far less that stellar.

Glad you got it going!

There is a small hole the dipstick tube fits into on the upper surface of the sump. The end of the tube has a small o-ring and the upper bracket is secured with a small screw to the side of the RH cylinder head. Be sure you clean the area around the dipstick tube hole so no dirt or debris enters the sump.

Appreciate the help. I eventually was able to find it. Had to finagle that son b- in there but finally got it.
