Default Alternator issues....

Battery went dead on me today. Alternator was rebuilt a couple of weeks ago. I checked the voltage coming from the field bolt and the big bolt. Field was ~14.2 VDC, Big Bolt ~14.05VDC. Voltage at battery was 12.25VDC. I checked for voltage drop between each of the bolts and the +terminal on battery and both showed approx the same drop ~ -1.8 VDC

Where is the problem??

Do I have a bad ground somewhere or are one of the wires coming off the alternator grounding somewhere?

How can I check for this?

I know that the big wire on the alternator goes to the starter, but where does the field wire go??

Default You shouldnt be seeing that much voltage drop. Check my FAQ entry.

It could be the ground or the cable between the alternator and battery.

Default I think that I found the problem....

the mo'fracking bolt on the starter is loose, AGAIN!!! I am so hating life right now, I have to get this done tonight because I lent my beater to one of my best friends, who is without wheels right now. His wife wrecked his beemer, not really wrecked, but high centered a concrete exit ramp gore and punched a hole in the oil pan (tearing up the steering rack and subframe in the process). She actually drove to where we were. She told us that she might have hit something and the car was handling "funny". Luckily it was only about .5 mile away, there was still plenty of oil in the crankcase.

Default went old school on it...

double nutted the bitch. Cranked it up, 13.9 vdc across the battery terminals and a drop of ~.142 from the alternator to the + terminal of battery. I believe that this crisis is over.
