Anyone ever have a Speedometer fail intermitantly?

I have had the speedometer fail 3x now while driving. I bought my car Second Hand with 54 K miles so it has no warrenty. I am thinking this is a sensor or connection issue. My Chilton's Manual is completely worthless at providing any info on the matter. Anyone ever done a sensor replacement or have a decent reference?

Did the car fail to log any miles as well?

Yes.. trip odometer remained at 0 for the trip home.

yes. Trip odometer remained at 0 for the trip home or until the speedometer poped back up.

Certain symptoms mean different things.....more

If it works for a while, but starts acting real wierd at higher speeds, it's usually the sensor ring inside the trans. This involves some minor trans disassembly, but the whole trans doesn't actually need to come out of the car. The actual speed sensor is easy to swap, but is rarely the fix.

My track car does that over 120 mph, then doesn't start working right until I'm down around 80. I just live with it.

Happened to me, worse when wet, they replaced the speedo sendor on the gearbox under warranty

I wonder what it is, cuz mine hasn't popped back on and no speedometer or miles.. I'll keep U posted

I did notice a pattern to the Speedometer failing. The "Worse when wet" comment tipped me off. Sure enough, it rained the day after this was posted. Guess what?, .5 miles out of the driveway, my speedometer dropped to zero. When conditions were dry about 9 hours later it worked fine. All of the times it has failed have been in very humid, raining, or sub dew-point conditions. Moisture must be causing a short or an erronous sensor reading.
