If you're purchasing a new vehicle, the traditional 4 speed automatic is no longer available and hasn't been since 1998(?). If you choose to buy a new A4 with an automatic transmission you'll get a triptronic. If left in Drive, the 5 speed tiptronic behaves like a normal automatic transmission. The tiptronic also has an additional slot to the right that allows you to shift up and down the gears with a sequential shift like a motorcycle or racing car sans clutch. The computer can override your gear selection if determines you would overrev the engine.

Minor correction. A4 never had a 4 speed Auto. Started with a 5 speed Auto..
in 1995 and added the tiptronic in 1998. A6 in 1997. And then the world followed starting with the new E class of Mercedez having a 5 speed auto in 1997, then bimmer, and so forth and so on.

Pierce, I enjoy the dual personality of my tiptronic transmission on my '99.5 1.8T. I originally thought it was gimicky and a waste of money. Now it is my favorite feature of the car and one that always impresses those unfamiliar with German engineering. I allow my 82-year old father to use my car when I am away and it really helps him not to have to use a clutch in city driving. And I get a kick out of the difference in performance in the manual mode.

My budy's '96 Auto. 60k miles, no problems with tranny.
In fact, for $1100, you can convert it to tiptronic which makes me think that the Auto tranny is mechanically identical with today's tiptronic. Only difference would be the ECU controlling it and of course the tiptonic shift *****
