I had a bad ign control module, here is how to check it...
I have a 99 1.8T so it should be basically the same as yours. Take off the plastic shroud from the airbox on the left hand side of your engine bay. On the top of your airbox you have the ign control module. It is two couplers connected to it and says bosch embossed in the plastic. Unplug it and pull it off. There might be two tiny screws on it too, cant remember off hand but undo those. Grab a multimeter. If you dont have one go to autozone or something. I think i paid like 12 dollars for mine. Now that you have the ign control module disconnected and the multimeter handy, take a look at the ign control module. You will see 1 side with 5 pins and one side with 4 pins. The side with 4 pins are for cyliders 1, 2, 3, and 4. The side with the 5 pins are (pin 1) cylinder 1, (pin 2) cylinder 2, (pin 3) ground, (pin 4) cylinder 3 and (pin 5) cylinder 4. What you are going to do is check the resistance across 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4. Then you will check 1-3, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, or the current to ground. If you car runs they cant all be bad. For my case cylinder 2 was bad. It showed 0 resistance, while all other 3 cylinders and cylinders to ground gave a similar resistance. Make sure you have your multimeter set to the correct amplification or it wont show anything. If it checks out, your problem is elseware. If its broken here are some places you can get them:

BTW, when I called my dealership about this part, they said it could cost me $471.20. Guess thats why people on here call it a stealership... lol.
