Default Backfiring pulled 8 codes!!!

We have a 97 a4 2.8 quattro. My girlfriend mostly uses it to go to work and back a week ago the CEL came on and today she said the car started backfiring really bad so she turned around and brought the car back home I hooked up the code reader and pulled 8 codes.

P034 cylinder 4 misfire

P0170 fuel trim bank 1

P0173 fuel trim bank 2

P0171 system too lean bank 1

P0305 cylinder 5 misfire

P0306 cylinder 6 misfire

P0300 random misfire

P0171 system too lean

I cleared the codes and took the car out for a test drive to see what codes came back and to see if I could get it to miss again. I took it on a 10 min drive and couldnt get a single code to come back up however I doubt whatever caused all these codes is just going to go away anyone have any suggestions on things I should check out? We replaced the water pump timing belt and thermostat about 2 months ago that was the last big service that was done the car has 150xxx miles on it.

Might be a fuel issue as I doubt all your coil packs failed like this at the same time. Might try replacing the fuel filters. You should also run a can of BG44K in the gas tank

Or a fuel pump; suddenly lean then OK isn't a fuel filter problem in my opionion. My '96 2.8 pump quit a few months ago, no warning and not under the best circumstances. I'd consider that a warning that its soon going to give up. I got a new one from a company in Santa Barbara CA, about $80 and not too hard to change either.

Actually, that's a great call. That would explain the inability to duplicate the symptoms. Concur: fuel pump.

At least changing the fuel pump isn't too bad. I guess teres no way to test it for sure though? I also read somewhere that it could be the MAF but I guess if it were I would have been able to duplicate the CEL.

Got a phone number or website for that company?

Try this EBAY motors link to where I ordered mine:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RC:MOTORS:1123

The pump that I got from them is no-name, probably China, however it looked exactly like the VDO that came out, right down to glass-smooth finish and all details. Chances are this comes from the same factory, without the VDO name and VAG part number on it, so it can sell for what it's actually worth. It's been quiet and no problems (so far!)
