Default best b5 lowering spring

I have a 96 a4 2.8 Quattro and am buying new suspension for it. I've decided on Bilsten sport shocks but am undecided on what springs to get. I want to have a near stock smooth ride and still have some sportiness. I've heard that H&R springs, while good are a little rough in the ride quality department. Any ideas? Ive been shopping between H&R, Neuspeed, and Eibach. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have Intrax springs on my '96 2.8 FWD, progressive-wound so they ride decently, however kind of soft in the front, and stock shocks, so I've got to watch the speed bumps. There are scrapes on both cat shields because my wife has taken it to the store a few times. I crossed my fingers that it would sit right when putting the car back on the ground; it looks nice, very slight nose-down attitude. New Level Motorsports has them, however you would need to check if they are Quattro springs.

The Bilstein shocks are very firm. If you want a near-stock ride, get factory sport springs. They're about perfect.

Bilstein shocks all around with Vogtland lowered sport springs. Make sure the shocks are meant for lowered vehicles. I have this setup on my vehicle. Reduced body roll by about 50%. More firm than stock, I don't bottom out at certain spots in the city even though I used to with the stock setup and even though the car is lowered by about a inch front and rear. I think I got mine both for like 760.00 or something like that. Unless your going to the track or going to car shows you do not need expensive coil-over springs. The bilstein's are adjustable anyways if you decide you want it slightly lower or slightly higher.

To keep a luxury but sporty ride, get the oem sport springs with bilstein perched shocks (lowest setting)
It's super nice.

So I want to question on this topic. I have a 96 A4 Quattro and would like to lower it about 2 inches. Why is it bad to just lower the car with lowering springs vs buying new shocks and springs? Side note, my car has 118k miles on it.

I'd say it's because your stock shocks are set for the travel that your current springs allow. If you go with new/lower springs, the shock will be further compressed and won't be acting within it's optimal damping range.....if that makes sense.
