Clutches don't typically hold/slip/hold/slip/hold like that. They typically either hold okay or slip at a certain load or >. That load threshold will usually lessen as the clutch gives up but it doesn't usually increase.
When you have a worn out clutch, it never recovers, and will slip worse all
the time. If you decide to pull it out, you can send us the flywheel also
and we can test its rotational integrity. That's very common on well driven
A4's.
