Default Bilstein Shocks Question

I'm thinking of upgrading my shocks to Bilsteins but I saw on AIM's page that there are two kinds. Sport and HD. I've searched the archives to find more about the HD's but everyone talks about the Sports. Are the HD's bad? Will the drop be the same for the HD & Sport if I got H&R Sport Springs? Which one is more comfortable? I would prefer to have more opinions on the HD Shocks more than the Sports.
Thanks,
Jeremiah
99 1.8T Tip

Jeremiah:
Here are quotes directly from the Bilstein catalog:
"HD - Heavy Duty Setting - For most vehicles including full-size sedans...these shocks provide improved handling and stability without sacrificing ride comfort. ...Ideal for heavy hauling while still maintaining a street ride."
"Sport Setting - For the performance minded driver, Sport shocks deliver absolute mastery of the road surface. Designed to push a car's suspension to its performance peak, these super-firm shocks are well suited for use with special springs, anti-roll bars or other suspension upgrades."
In a nutshell, Bilstein recommends the Sport valving for all modified suspensions. Hope this helps you out!

Default Bilstein Shock answer

ok!
bilstien makes a comfort HD and sport. comfort is a direct replacement to all bimmers and benzes not sure if they have a line for other luxury cars?
the HD is firmer valving thatn the sport. these are a step up fron comfort. a firmer ride and the shock body are black. Spport is a tad diffrent in vlalving but it is esentially 90% the same valving the major diffrence is it is 20mm shorter than the HD. this si the choice for lowerd cars but if you have pot holes and other things go for the HD.
I have installed HD on my Eibach Equipped Mercedes with no problems but i found it to be soft. in my Audi i purchased H&R race with bil sport and this was firmer in ride and just what i wanted over the HD.
If you have a FWD audi they have both the HD and the sport. if you have a Quattro they only offer the sport shocks for this car.
JC M.

I researched this last August and talked to the techs at Bilstein.
The compression and rebound specs for the HD and Sport versions are the same. As JC M. pointed out, though, the Sports have 20mm less travel due to a shorter shaft.
I was told that you could use either one for the Quattro as long as you weren't lowering the car more than 2". My 1.8T has the HDs in front and work just fine with H&R sport springs.
Jim

I never knew they made HD for the Quattro??? hmm.... i like the HD cause they provide a more comfortable ride. my mercedes benz handels good with the HD's but it would lean. my quattro is smooth does not lean but you feel more bounce that with HD units.
Thanks for the info now i know i can go to HD's later on.
JC M.
