Default Here's why...

The engine is designed to run without burning or leaking oil once it's been worn in. To accomplish this the engine is built very "tight", so tight in fact that while new it doesn't get optimum lubrication, and in escence is "low" on oil. A state where it is best not to subject the engine to high loads. Through mechanical action (friction) the internals of the engine eventually smooth out and wear down minutely. Now the engine is "broken in" and can handle full load. Also not whomping on it during the break in allows everything to settle in evenly, helping to prevent oil loss and roughness towards the end of its service life. Default That would make the 1st I've ever heard of a dealer saying that....

That's not even consistent with the Audi manual. I would begin to question the reliability of the information I was receiving from my dealer if they were to say that. My 2© worth.
~Matt

Default that sounds like a good reason... thanks!

I have been waiting for a reason other than "you are supposed to" and your reason makes a fair amount of sense. Good Deal.

Default Does once in a while hurt?

Just curious. I'm still in my break-in period, and I have, on occasion, while entering the freeway on an uphill ramp and trying to get around a )O*&^ bus or 18-wheeler and up to speed, gone over 4,000 RPM by around 250-400 RPM. (What can I say, old habits die hard ). In addition, I had to take a longish trip the last couple of days (~150 miles each way) where I used cruise control to prevent a speeding ticket. Probably took it off cruise control (69 MPH) because of construction (down to 45 MPH) or a slow car every 25 minutes or so.

Mileage is now around 700. Will either of these things actually "hurt" the engine in the long run?
Ruth

Default Doubt it, it's only consistant high loads during braek in that are a no-no

Default Re: Engine oil

I noticed engine oil (AWD '99 A4) at below minimum level and wondered why? The car has 11,500 miles on it and was pruchased used with 8,500. Last service was performed at 6,000. No record of any engine work done in Audi comuter data system. We have been checking oil regularly and monitoring the progress.

Last oil check within 300 miles did not indicate any los of oil. No leaks or spill in the oil pan evident. Emissions appear to be normal. Any idea what's going on?
