Default buzzing from speaker

I have a 96 2.8Q and I have noticed that there is an intermittent "buzzing" that seems to be coming from the front passenger-side tweeter mounted beside the inside door handle. The strange thing is that I can hear this buzzing even when the radio is off!!!

Any thoughts?? Also, to get at these speakers, do you just pry off the covers with a flathead screwdriver?

Would a new speaker be covered under the Audi assured extended warranty (5 yrs, 120,000 km)??

Default I get that too. But only when the stereo on and only certain music - like vocals. wow...

this sound system gotta go! Another observation: popping and clicking of the speakers (Esp. right side) when playing music louder than normal with heavy bass (which the system can't handle anyway)

I agree, but what system speakers would be a good replacement?

Default Ummm...

That's sounds an awful lot like distortion and is probably related to the speaker being over driven (kind of like red lining an engine... not good). You should avoid this if you want to prevent permanent damage to the speakers, assuming they have not been toasted by such abuse already.

Default Very wierd. Can't think of anything that would cause that sort of behavior with the stereo off...

Sounds like something may be wrong with your stereo further on up the line. Possibly a bad amplifier/head unit?

No. It's not turned up THAT loud. It happens at lets say... moderately high levels.

I notice that too, but only sometimes when cell phone rings. Any similar power drain?

Default Are you sure?

You might be surprised how little volume it can take to overwhelm the average stock car stereo system, and many people do not have a good ear for distortion, which is to say many people confuse distorted sound with loud sound or high volume.

If you have two stereo systems playing the same material at the same volume (i.e. sound pressure level, SPL), one with 5 percent total harmonic distortion (THD) and the other with 0.05 percent THD, the average listener will generally perceive the more distorted system as substantially louder, despite the fact that they are actually at the same volume (SPL).

For clearly reproduced sound (minimal distortion) on a quality audio system (up to the threshold of pain/overload at least), most people will not really appreciate quite how loud the volume really is until they hear someone try to talk over it. It's a weird effect, but next time you are near a truly high end audio store, give it a try. (What is high end? Look for names like Mark Levinson, Krell, Meridian, AR (Acoustic Research), Linn, B&W, Snell, Thiel, Martin-Logan, to name just a few.)

When it comes to audio reproduction, achieving high volumes (SPLs) is far easier than achieving high volumes with no appreciable distortion and accurate reproduction.

positive. It sounds like popping of an old record. Strange though - only happens w/ cd playing.

Thanks for your input but no one answered my question if a replacement speaker would be covered under the Audi assured warranty.
Thanks,
