Default Can 5/32" tire tread depth different really damage the QUATTRO system???

Here's the story, I've got a seperated tire, and the tread left is 5/32" and pretty much the same for the other 3. The depth for a brand new Conti is 10/32". I went to my dealer and he told me he's not sure that if I can only change the damaged one. He said the depth different between the new one and old ones (5/32") might damage the QUATTRO system or whatever, since it is very sensitive. Nobody at the dealer knows, and he's gonna call technical support in Michigan and find out more information. Since I'm upgrading to 17" wheels/tires, I don't want to waste money to buy new set of 16"s.
Any opinion will be appreciated.

Default Manual states tread wear isn't a factor in the quattro system, just have to be the same size tires

So what happens if, say, one 17" tire goes flat and you don't have a 17" spare?

If you did a proper "plus 1" size upgrade, the rolling diameter of your 17" is the same as your 16".

For a good explaination of "plus 1" see the following link:

If done correctly you should have not worries.

Default I'd consider new tires all around

5/32 depth isn't that much. Continental recommends definite replacement at 3/32 or, for more of a safety margin, at 4/32. So, you should replace the remaining three tires fairly soon anyway.

If you use the Contis in snow, I think you should definitely replace all four, since all-season tires supposedly rely very heavily on tread depth for snow performance.

Of course, if you are upgrading to new wheels and tires very soon anyway and don't plan to use the 16" Contis again in the snow, then you'd be wasting money on four new tires.
