CAT question
My A4 1.8T recently developed a kinda stutter/jerking on acceleration. The check engine light also popped on. The mechanic says its the CAT. Is that typical?? Also are they hard to change out?? Im a shadetree mechanic, but have yet to venture down this avenue... 
Also what about just getting rid of the CAT and put a piece of pipe in there instead? I know ill fail emissions but i dont have to worry about that

I just replaced mine - here is some info:
I replaced mine with a Random Technologies high-flow CAT. I do not reccomend this CAT, but here is an excellent writeup that includes instructions to help you decide difficulty:
