chains/cables?

I am going to the mountains and there is a lot of snow in the forcast so I think the conditions will be R-1 (chains required). I was wondering what chains or cables I should use my car has awd. I have been told that they could cause problems with the quattro.

This...coming from a non-californian...

1. Have winter tires...No mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall means you shouldn't be on the mountain.

2. Based on previous posts from CA-ians...if cables/chains are required...have some in the trunk, but do NOT put them on your car, since they are not recommended. CHP may turn you around without cables/chains. I believe you can install cables (not chains) if you have a -1 size on your car (195 tire?), but in general, there isn't enough clearance between the tire and the control arm to safely run these.

Again...I don't live in CA, and have never been up in the mountains in CA...so I'm regurgitating for you....
