Changing Drivetrain Fluids
Ok, I've seen a lot of stuff around the net and once again I need the lack of bull**** this forum offers. I know some drive-line fluid needs changing as I am at 200k miles.
1. I was wondering if the front and center differentials are part of the same reservoir as the transmission.
2. They say that the trans fluid is life long, but we know that's not true, but what about the diff fluids?
3. What is the best fluid to use? I was told Royal Purple.

If you want all of the factory fluid specs and capacities for your Audi checkout ALLDATAdiy
The fluid type specs in the B5 A4 manual, for instance, are absolutely NOT the correct and current information from Audi.
Both the Audi and the Miata subscriptions are missing HUGE amounts of key data.

Both are separate from the tranny fluid. Center diff has a drain and fill plug. Front has a fill only. Only way to change the later is to suck out whatever fluid you can and refill.
A GL-4 fluid should be used or a GL-5 that is safe for soft metals. Most GL-5's now days are compatible with a GL-4 spec.

I second it! Royal purple is a good brand but I would not use in an Audi Transmission. I always replace with the OEM fluid in the transmission and Diff. It's a bit more expensive for the OEM stuff, but it holds up for a long time.
