Check engine light ...

98 2.8qms ..i stopped really hard and my CEL came on and the engine started to idle very roughly , bouncing between 300 rpm's and 900 rpm's , i pull over stop the car, check out everything ..seems to be okay ..now every once and a while it starts to idle like that again, id say every 20 to 30 minutes for mabey like 5 minutes while in nuetral and low rpm's ...car has 75.1k and im not shure if the timing belt has been changed or not..first problem with the car in 8 months and its serviced reguarly .. any ideas ? TIA

Do whatever you can to find out if your timing belt has been replaced.

other than find service records , is there any way to confirm if it has been changed or not ?

Get the ECU scanned for codes...

many times the codes will point you to the problem. At the very least, they give you a starting point where you can then search the archives on AudiWorld to find the problem.

if the car has stayed in the same area, call some of the dealers in the area to c if they did the work on it.. if the car has left the area where the original owner had it, chance are you wont find out.. Try to c if any big dealers in ur area have the vin on record..
