Check Engine Light

I have a 1997 A4 with 30K on it.
I was driving on the freeway tonight and the round, yellow "check engine" light on the dashboard started blinking. Then it just stayed lit and it hasn't gone out since.
Obviously, I'm taking it in tomorrow morning, but is that Malfunction light a catch-all for any engine screw-up or does it refer to something specific?

There is something about it in the manual. The best thing to do it's to go to the dealer and find out what DTC it is.

I had the engine light stayed on for more than a week. It took me two trips to the dealer to figure out the problem. If you have fault code P1476 (or fuel tank pressure error) and problem with the fuel gauge reading, ask them to check the LDP ( I assume this is the pump used for balancing the fuel in the gas tank as I didn't hear the pumping sound when the light was on). Now they replaced it and everything is normal.
