This basically flows air into the exhaust to cause it to heat up faster.
Could also be a bad 02 sensor.
It's probably safe to drive until you can take it into the shop, as long as the check engine light isn't flashing.

Sure start with the MAF and see what you get.
Trust me. I just got this Audi the first week of January. People told me, and I didn't think it was very important.
The cable is $13 on ebay and I wish it was the first thing that I bought for the car as it would have saved me at least 2 weeks. Trust me.
Get a vag-com cable. Clear the codes first, and see which ones come back. When I scanned mine, it threw like 20 codes. After clearing them and driving, it's only been throwing one cam sensor code.
There is no better thing you can buy if you plan on diagnosing it yourself. Or you can spend time driving back and forth to autozone using a scanner that doesn't do a fraction of the things. This vag-com can read every last thing in this car, down to discrete interior electronics, to the transmission, to the airbag.

I use windows 7 pro 32 bit and it works fine. 64 bit OS has problems as heard "home edition" does as well. If you have 64 bit you'll need to download windows xp mode and virtual pc (free from MS).
If you have windows xp already you should not have any problems.
