Check engine!! please help!!!

I got in my car last night and when i turned it on it started shaking and idleing very roughly. the check engine light came on and it sounded like the turbo wasnt running. there was also a plasticy burning smell coming from under the hood when i got it home. my car is a 99.5 a4 1.8TQ. any ideas of what it could be or how much it will cost???

is the light flashing or just on

could be coil packs
could be ignition amp module.
could be any of about 7000 different codes.
pull the code and then move forward towards a solution.

the light is flashing, i am taking it in to get VAG but i would like to have an idea what is going on before i take it in.

probably one of the 2 I mentioned

thoe are both exceptionally good at causing the engine to shake... because its firing on 3 cyl not 4.

just got back from the mechanic. VAG showed that cylinder #2 was not firing. the mechanic says that he has never seen it before. but cylinder still has compression so i hope its nothing too bad. thanks for the help. by the way, you wouldnt know how much an ignition control module goes for would you thanks.
