Basically, your car comes with a stock ECU (Electronic Control Unit, I think) which governs the car's speed, acceleration, and other things by telling parts what to do (especially the turbo). When you upgrade your chip, you are simply telling the car to do things more aggressively. On the 1.8T, the chip dictates to the turbo booster to add more PSI.<p><A HREF="http://www.stoneleigh-manor.com/True/true.html><IMG SRC="http://www.stoneleigh-manor.com/True/king.jpg"></A>

Adds about 50 hp. Dealer must prove chip was the cause of the problem to deny service.

No. Your car comes de-tuned. Your turbo can handle PSI well above what the stock.....
ECU programming pushes through it. However, the turbo is just like any other physical object, and therefore, the harder you push it, the lesser it's lifespan. I am of the opinion that this loss in life expectancy is marginal as long as you take care of it (cooling it down after spirited driving, etc). Also, you have to run 92 or higher octane always. Otherwise, you'll get pinging, and your performance will come down.
Oh yeah, it adds anywhere from 40 to 47 hp. Add a freer flowing exhaust and you'll get another 4 to 7 hp. Add a custom air intake and that'll give you around 5 extra hp.<p>APR V.3,Remus,Eurosports,S4 17" Wheels

The K03 Turbo that is in yout 1.8T is
"controlled" (actually the wastegate)
by your car's computer. The ECU upgrade
changes the fuel maps and boost settings
so that more air and fuel reach the engine
for combustion, i.e. more horsepower.
Depending on whether you get a .8 bar chip
(11-12psi of boost) or a 1 bar chip (14-15psi)
you will realistically see anywhere from 180
to 200 hp with or without a new exhaust system.
The main difference between the .8 bar chips
and the 1 bar chips is torque (a matter of
acceleration, the more torque the quicker you
get to 60, the more horsepower the higher your
top speed), as well as turbo reliability.
The K03 turbo is rated to 12psi of max boost,
and 1 bar chips "overboost" the turbo for
more power at the expense of turbo longevity.
There are plenty of A4's with 1 bar chips and
thousands of miles on the stock turbo, so who knows (I have had the Neuspeed .8 bar chip
[$170] and the GIAC 1 bar chip [$400], and personally I recommend the Neuspeed).
