Default Chip Upgrade Performance

I reviwed the chip upgrade performance specs from European Car Magazine (May 1998). I am cofused about the performance specs. No doubt the increase in horsepower and torque are excellent (for most chips, esp. the Wett and TAP). The 0-60 times are consistent, around 7.8 seconds. My question is, how can it be only 7.8 seconds? The data on the 2.8 is 0-60 in 7.1 sec (quattro). I figured with a slightly lighter car and a good chip, the 1.8T Q would be faster!

Default Times....

Well, for one thing, you can only compare the 2.8 #s if they actually had a 2.8 on the premises and tested the chipped cars against the 2.8. There are too many factors like launch technique, environmental conditions, and most of all, driver, that can affect the times. The 7.1s number is probably under ideal conditions by an expert driver. Check out Wett's website, they have an article where they tested a 30V 2.8 vs. 1.8TQM stock vs. 1.8TQM Wett 1.0. The Wett was fastest, but it's time was something like 7.2s or so. The 2.8's time was about 7.7 as far as I remember.
In the end, I believe a chipped 1.8 is faster than a stock 2.8 if that's really what you're looking for...
Hope that helps.....
-Ash 98.5 1.8TQMS
