Default Most of the people that buy boost controllers here have larger turbo upgrades

and use the controller to hold a set boost pressure that the chip is programmed for or less, they dont always get them to add or raise the boost level.

Default Here you compare the 2

SplitSec BC
1. just raising the boost to a max 12-14.5 psi

VS

Chip
1. raising boost to around 1.1-1.4 bar (15-20 psi) depending on the year of the car and chip tuner

2. adjust the adv timing

3. adjust a/f and fuel maps to allow for better gas milage and more power

4. raises redline limit and removes MPH limits

Default Won't the factory maps compensate the same way?

Or do they hit soft limits or some other kind performance limiter?

Default Same things: boost, advance, air/fuel, ...

I know chip tuners remap those parameters for the amount of allowed boost and the BCS just reconditions the signal into the stock maps. My question is does the stock setup have limitations that are removed by chipping? Or by running higher boost in to the stock maps can you see the same results? I'm not decided either way, just want to make the right choice as far as performance vs. risk.

Default The maps stay the same while using the stock chip

If the timing is not adjust correctly the performance will be hurt as the ecu pulls it back because of knock/ping.

The fuel maps will not adjust for more boost, the ecu just keeps adding fuel as the g/s at the maf go up. But it does so only at the rate the maps say.

So by just adding boost all your gaining is that, just boost. While everything else stays pretty much the same. With a chip you gain much more power by setting everything correctly to a set boost level. Even off boost a/f changes giving you a much better running car. This is why most people see a gain in mpg during fwy driving after getting a chip. You wont see that gain with just changing the boost levels since your not changing anything else while off of boost.
