Chipping question

I haven't seen this in a FAQ, but how doesinstalling an aftermarket performance chip in your A4 affect the Audi warranty or emissionsrequirements? Does Audi tune and treat yourchipped car like it was "normal"?Thanks!John

John,Sorry, no FAQ yet. The Archives are sometimes hard to get info from, but have this discussion a number of times. The final assessment is that your experience will depend entirely on your mechanic, area manger, and chip design.There is no tuning in the classic sense with modern cars. If they are not chip friendly they will give you a hard time and note it in your computer file that tracks the car nationwide.

Illegal in US for them to void warranty outright, BUT (more)...

I don't know where you live, but in the US there are laws governing how warranties are affected by installation of aftermarket parts. Basically, a manufacturer is obligated to honor ther warranty UNLESS an independent party can certify that the problem was indeed caused by the aftermarket part. In that case, YOU pay.So far, [to my knowledge] there have been very few problems with chipped cars, and none these problems were ever traced to an aftermarket chip. Also to my knowledge, nobody with a chipped car has ever been denied warranty service. However, warnings HAVE been given. Tread at your own risk. Yeah, just like VWoA voiding warranty for the aftermarket Beetle cabrio...

It was in the May 3th issue of AutoWeek. VW told their dealers not to do any warranty work (including brakes, wheels...etc.) on these aftermarket Beetle convertables. The reason being.... structural change - added weight (~300lbs)! Of course, some think it's because VW is fearing that they would lose sale of their own Beetle convertable when it comes out... in some 2 years.Cris
