Chips
I bought my 1.8T a week ago and had never heard of a 'chip' until just a few days ago. Should I 'upgrade?' What is involved and can I do it myself?<p>Also, are the sound systems in the '99s the same as the '98s?<p>Thanks for the consideration. So far, I love the car!<p>Todd

Todd.... I waited untill after break in process. i chipped my car at 1,300 miles. you will be amazed at the power your going to get! it transform a tame show horse into a wild mustang (not refering to FORD).<p>if you do chip go for the 1 bar upgrade. the .8 is a good upgrade also but i think the 1 bar is more bang for the buck.<p>I have the ABT Stage 2 chip. i would go for Wett or ABT or even Oettinger but Oettinger is only rated at 193 which is stage 1 of ABT.<p>I spent 1,700 for the ABT stage 2 deal. Chip, Oettinger Exhaust, and a filter. It is well worth the cash. rted power is 215hp. Wett has there chip and filter only for 200hp but with a muffler it should go up.<p>Enjoy your car and don't be scared to chip it BTW use Sythetic oil at all times! i am synthetic beliver i have a 10 year old 190E 2.6 and it still pounds like it was new.

Todd. Do not jump into this too quickly. if you are not familiar with all the lingo and ins and outs of performance upgrades please RESEARCH. People on this board all have different opinions and preferences. If you are speed and performance hound then it may work you. You may want to ride with someone who is chipped before making any decisions. There are plenty of people in Atl with chips.<br>I have a chipped 99 and I use MTM from Hoppen Motorsports, but that is may preference. I will keep my components the same through the Hoppen Staging system. Get in touch. I have a friend who is a tuner here locally for Hoppen.<br>Go to www.autobahn-performance.com

Todd, I believe that it has not been emphasized that aside of the chip, you should upgrade your suspension as well (shocks and springs at least)... I was thinking about chipping my A4 1.8T, but I do not have the Sport option (I bought the only car off the lot, and did not want to wait), and I found it "too soft" even for 150 hp. <p>Maybe somebody else has a different opinion?

Suspension upgrade is not needed...
I've got the Wett 1.0 bar chip in my '97 A4 1.8Tqms (sport package in '97 DID NOT include stiffer springs/shocks/sways). I do however have 16" rims and Dunlop "summer" tires from a newer '98 A4.<p>Anyway, I don't feel that upgrading the suspension is *required* when you're installing a chip. The chassis dynamics have not been ruined by installing the chip. I would agree that a chip upgrade will bring out the deficiencies in the stock suspension, but I don't feel the car is dangerous.<p>However, I am planning on upgrading the suspension in the future, as I want to eek out that last iota of performance from my car.<p>Just my $.02<p>Andy Hedin<br>'97 A4 1.8Tqms, ABT Filter, Wett 1.0 Bar Chip
