Default Coilover question

I have a pretty basic question about coilovers. Does the amount of thread showing have to be equal on both sides (front matching front, and rear matching rear)? Or does it need to be adjusted so that the distance from the ground to the wheel well is the same on both sides?

I find that when both sides have exactly the same amount of threads showing on both sides, one side is higher than the other. If they are to be adjusted so that both fenders are the same height, it's much more difficult to balance the car, because if you raise one side, it affects the height of all the others.

Anyone had any luck getting it set perfectly?

Default Same amount of thread is a good starting point, but the weight dist. isn't even

so you've got to fine tune it afterwards by checking fender gap or distance from fender to ground.

Default Also - one thing that I would do if I had it to do all over again...

put electrical or duct tape over the exposed threads if you can get at them. This will prevent them from getting covered in crap that will make your coilovers impossible to raise or lower after going through a winter or two.

Default Not so sure I'd recommend that...

Any kind of tape will just allow water and salt to stay on the threads 24/7 (can't really keep the threads water tight). I'd probably recommend antisieze past, or some kind of lithium lubricant. Clean and lubricate 2x's a year.

Default Better since it's very pliable it'll make a tighter seal...but my original point holds...

once moisture gets in, it's not getting out.

Default Re: Coilover question

Trick is to have same weight on each wheel that is why you run coilovers, best handling. Need wheel scales, but balance, doesnt matter where they sit as long as weight balanced

Default So, will they be more balanced by making the thread showing equal, than by making the fender height

the same?

So it sounds like you also make fine tuning adjustments to get the best of both worlds, ride balance and height balance, while compromising a little on both.
