Cold engine acceleration problem

I have a 99.5 2.8QMS with the following problem. I start it up cold and until the car warms up I get stutters during acceleration. This is with about half open throttle below 4000 rpms. After it warms up for about 5 minutes then it accelerates like normal. My idle is also all over the place, up, down, up, down. This happens all the time.

Any ideas?

This happened with my old car (Probe GT)

It's probably because the engine hasn't fully warmed up yet so the choke is still in.

If you ride a motorcycle you know the feeling when you forget to turn the choke off and try to take off.

Try using even less throttle and a smoother (and slower) clutch release.

same thing happened with my 99.5...

my 99.5 1.8Tqstip did the exact same thing you are describing. eventually, it would misfire so much that the check engine light came on. (happened 3 times) i took it to the dealer and they just replaced a couple sensors (coolant temp) and my fouled plugs . this did nothing to solve the problem. the issue is that the plugs are building up carbon deposits. i do a TON of city driving, like 90%, and use lots of boost. this creates a lot of unburned fuel, and hence, the carbon deposits. go to your local auto parts store and pick a fuel system cleaner. i did this and my car has run MUCH better since, although not perfectly. get one to reduce carbon deposits. good luck, and i hope this helps.

me too in my old Galant, it idled fine...but it surged under acceleration for a minute or two

Check the coolant temp sensor.

I just went through this. In the bently manual there is a chart for resistance vs Temp. I can post it if you need it. Pins 1 and 3 should be 1.4k or so..

Or better yet get a new one.
