Control Arms

My car starting grindling when driving slowly, expecially through bumps. Took to dealer and they have to replace both Control arms on the front. Anyone else have the same problem?

97 A4 1.8TQ

Yep common problem...

Had my right one done last month and now the left one is starting to creak.

Besides being annoying, does it post any safety problem?

And has anyone dealt with Agincourt Autohaus (Toronto, Canada) about this? Do they give you a lot of hassle before they are willing to repair it? Thanks!

Not a safety problem....

The culprit is a worn lower control arm bushing. It has nothing to do with the arm itself, but Audi parts dept. doesn't supply the bushings by themselves so the entire arm is replaced.

Dealer shouldn't give you a hassle. I mentioned my problem and the service advisor reacted like he'd heard it a million times. It's a common problem mentioned on this forum. I just hope they fix the problem before I'm out of warranty. If it happens out of warranty, I plan on fighting to make sure it's still covered.

I have a '96 and a '98 A4. So far both lower control arms have been replaced in the '96, and one in the '98. I have an appointment to get the last one done in a few days. It's a simple procedure, much less painful than a trip to the Dentist. Just sit in the waiting room and read magazines for an hour or so, then drive away in a quiet car.
