Coolant problem help!

ok so for the past few days now, I've noticed my coolant gauge shoot up to a tick below the H mark, i figure ok, I'm in stop and go traffic in NYC the car is going to get hot. Tonight as I'm driving around, the coolant warning go off and the warning gauge is again at that same level.
Everything goes away as soon as i'm up to about 65 + MPH and getting enough air into the engine. I've checked my levels (when the car is cold, like every morning now), and the level seems normal. The car otherwise operates fine. I dont want to pump any more money into the car since i'm trading it in and getting the new B6 on friday. Should I just have the coolant flushed or something?
I have a 2000 A4, 54,000 miles, 2.8 Q, tip tronic.

Check the level in the reserve with the car cold, take the cap off the reservoir and peer in there.

It's probably a dead fan.

At higher speeds there is enough airflow, but at lower speeds, you need the fans to draw air through the radiator. If those fans aren't working, the car will overheat.

Do yourself a favor...pull over, pop the hood, and wait 1/2 hour before continuing to drive. If you overheat the engine, you'll risk cracking or warping the block...then you've REALLY got a problem on your hands.
