Default coolant temp problems (sorta long)

for the last three years i have had no probs with the coolant temp... always goes to the exact middle after 5 minutes of warm up and easy driving and the needle stays there until i turn the car off at my destination.

but since wednesday it's been acting up. sometimes it will take 20 minutes to get to the middle, and even then it won't stay there. in the course of my trip, it fluctuates from the middle all the way to cold again and works its way toward warm before going back to complete cold. even on my two hour trip on the highway, the needle would read cold an hour into the trip (of course it was moving back and forth).

so what do i do? what do you think is wrong? i'm not too worried about it cuz the car still pulls alright and i don't 'hear' anything funny coming from the engine. i haven't quite figured out when it happens, and it may be my imagination but it seems like it goes toward cold when i push the engine somewhat hard, and it will go towards warm when i drive casually.

sorry for the length... just thought the detail would help you guys get a better idea of the situation and perhaps a more clear solution? thanks.

Default coolant temp sensor... my bad

alright so i'm always telling people to run a search before they ask a stupid question or post a dumb thread. well now i'm the hypocrite.. i was too lazy to do it and it wasn't till after i posted this thread that i found out the cause is most probably a buggy coolant temp sensor (seems like a common prob).

anyways, my question now is... how much is this going to cost me at the dealer? i'm taking my car in to get the airbag fixed (i'm out of my warranty but AoA is covering the cost of the airbag fix) so i would like them to fix the coolant temp sensor too. any estimates on cost? thanks.

Default Re: coolant temp sensor... my bad

I had that same problem before. The exact problem is the temperature sensor, not the water thermostat. Just change the temperature sensor. Don't let the dealer telling you stupid thing like replacing the water/radiator thermostat. Since your car is not physically heating up or anything. This is an electrical sensor problem. The sensor is located between the back of the engine and the firewall. Somebody on the web actually had a photo. If you stand facing the engine, it is on the left, near the air-intake toward the rear. Go do a search on the forum and you will find it.

Hope this help. Should cost you a lot if the dealer do it for you.

Mine went on my old 2000, my hands were too big to get down there.
