Default custom dual intercoller setup????

i am thinking about buying length of samco hose and setting up one of my my friends old s4 intercoolers along with mine rather than buying a larger intercooler. i think it would be prety easy and functional. we would use my stock and one s4 intercooler and set them up in a series so that the air went in the s4 intercooler first then mine then back to the origional spot. i dont hink it would be too hard since its just air getting piped around. let me know what you guys think as i am prety intrigued by our plan. i think it will be cool. and be cheep since i will only have to pay for the samco hose and will be getting the intercooler for free and doing the labor myself.

thanks, ian

Default easy said then done....many here have had this idea....but

If u yand the bumper...U'll see that the S4 cooler is not possible to mount on to an A4 on the passenger side...The A/c plumping and some other stuff sits in that area.
I'm not sure if the S4 has the A/c compressor at the same spot as the A4. If it does...the only way i could think that it "can" be done, Is by using S4 A/c lines that are routed diff. That may give u space to mount the IC.
Nobody has done this(that i know) so.......?

Default do you think u will really see that much of a performance gain for that much work?

do you have a big turbo kit?

Default You're in for a helluva headache...

First there is the issue Audi4orce mentioned. That might leave you thinking you can mount the S4 intercooler behind the bumper. Doing so will create the need for extra "snaked piping" because of the orientation of the inlet/outlet on the S4 piece. That, combined with the 2 intercooler set up will likely increase your pressure losses within the system. Only way to find out for sure is to try it.

Also, if you use the S4 IC, make sure you epoxy the end tanks (plastic) to the cores (alum). They have a tendency to leak. Same probably applies to the A4 IC's. As long as you're pulling everything to pieces, you may as well address that.

Default no big turbo yet, but i plan on it once i get out of school.

i dont think it will be all that hard. i just have to find a clean spot to put it and then cut the hose to the right lenght. i know i am making it sound simple here but i do understand what the project will take but i think i could complete it in a weekend. at teh moment it will not be so much for preformance but for the fact that its custom and i will be doing it myself. i do not know anyone who has done this, and i would like to be the first.

Default good point. any ideas how i would be able to increase air pressure?

im not too worried about running more hose but the air pressure loss is definalty a good point. do you know of anything i could put in to create more air pressure or it that something that is really difficult to change?

Default Got a large hairdryer?

If the turbo creates 19psi, in an ideal world, the intake manifold will read 19 psi. In the real world, you'll get some pressure loss through the intake system, and you might end up with 17-18 psi at the intake manifold. Furthermore, the intake tract in the 1.8T is fairly long. When you're at 0 psi, and your right foot demands 19 psi from the turbo, it takes a bit of time for the turbo to pressurize that entire tract. Thankfully the little K03 spools very quickly, so the effect is negligible on a stock A4. Adding an S4 IC will further elongate that tract...perhaps to the point where you'll notice some lag.

The solution is to eliminate any extra piping in the intake tract, and use an IC that minimized pressure losses, while still being efficient for your needs. If you can't minimize pressure losses, then the other solution is to get a bigger turbo.

It's like designing a car. If you want to make it faster, you can make it lighter. Alternatively, you can drop a bigger engine in it, but you're going to have to make compromises if you do that. Handling and gas mileage are just two things that will suffer as a result. If you trimmed weight an used a bigger engine, it's possible that you could have the best of everything.

Default Well....then u defeat the purpose of a IC...

hot air from A/c condesor plus Hot air from radiator, Then all that hot air is gonna hit the intercooler....That IC will never cool down the air thats passsing through...Not a good plan!!

You need to pick up a book and start reading before you hack your car.
