Default cylinder 1 misfire and cant find problem please read. long

i have a 1999 a4 quattro. during the last week i consistantly get a cylinder one misfire code(16685)and random misfire(16684). i have switched spark plugs and coil packs to different cylinders. swapted injectors to different cylinders and ran three tanks of fuel injector cleaner through to no avail. every morning cylinder one misfire with a blinking check engine light. but quits after warm up with no miss. i did the diy check on th n122 power output stage. and it checked good. so i though maybe it had to be cold to do it. so waited till next morning and actually switched n122 inputs 5 and 4. and also switched output numbers 1 and 2. to give a different path through the n122 but still fire the right plugs. but the misfire stayed in cylinder one. it shows almost 500 misfires in a minute and 0 when warm. all wires are also good from the computer all the way to the injectors and coil packs.

Default compression test?

Sounds like you've touched on everything else that would come to mind.

Default ignition amplifier... i know you said you did it...

but that would still be my guess. I'd do the check again.... I've only seen those symptoms when my IA went out.

thats my only option will go to garage and he said he would plug in a new to try. but have to leave it over night as it only does it when cold.

Did you do the compression test when it was cold?

cold and hot. made no difference.

Default Check the vac lines on the fuel pressure regulator.

If you don't find a leak, replace the FPR and see if that helps.

The second DTC you mentioned is misfiring on all cylinders, not just #1. Something common to all four cylinders is causing this. The FPR is the first thing that comes to mind.

fixed!!!!!! broken valve spring on exhaust number 1. thanks for all the help and ideas.
