Dead A4!
Well, my 97 A4 1.8TQS w/49800 miles died last thursday. Unexpectedly, out of nowhere. The car has been trouble free other than master cylinder going out on the clutch for past 49k miles. Roadside assistance was out in less than 1/2 hour to tow the car away.
It appears that the tip of a spark plug broke off, went into the cylinder and caused major havoc. Enough to a point where they are replacing the whole engine. Luckily it's under warranty (just barely) but they have to ship the engine over from Germany which will take 4+ weeks. At least got a 95 90CS as a loaner.
Anyone else have this problem with a 1.8T? My dealer say it's the first they've seen it on a Audi, actually had to call Audi to figure out what to do with the car.
I've got to compliment my dealer (Carousel in Minnesota) they've been bending over backwards to help me out with my problem. I'm trading the car in for a '00, and they will let me take delivery of the new one even before the old one gets repaired. I was told the '00 will show up end of the month, so crossing my fingers.
Went from a happy A4 owner to pissed off A4 owner to a happy A4 owner in a span of a week.
I wonder if car manufacturers try and get reimbursed in some way from the plug manufacturer, if the plug is actually defective. Anybody know?
It's good to here that your car has been otherwise virtually troublefree. I doubt there was actually a fault with the car that would cause this. You would likely have experienced other problems such as oil burning or check engine lights if the car wasn't running correctly.
A '95 90CS loaner is pretty nice. Good luck, and I hope your new A4 arrives soon! :-)

I do not hear about these problems with Lexus but you know what I don't care. My parents said you should get a Subaru and I think all wheel drive would be great but I want another German car. No more Japanese cars. I don't want to float (with the better ones) and the bicyle like solidity doesn't appeal to me anymore. I'm rambling. I'm glad you weren't hurt. Please consider posting pictures (of the interior) of your new car when you get it.
Thought I'd let you know. As for your mishap... you are lucky! very lucky!

Far as trying to sell a used car with 50k miles with new engine, it was going to be a headache explaining it to potential buyer regarding the engine, so trade it in, and let the dealer handle it.
My 97 was box stock.. Glad I didn't chip it, since it would've probrably not covered this failuer (I asked the dealer about it) The car had new plugs put in at 30k, so the plug that failed was not the original one that came with the car. Lastly, according to the service dept. They would've covered the car even if it was over 50k, up to about 51k is the limit.
The 00 comes in first week of November. Same color, options as my last one, addition of Xenon lights. Can't wait.
