Dead battery
Got lucky in that I was just at the airport, the next day (in my garage) my battery was deader than Elvis.
Replaced with an Autozone Duralast (48DL I think). Based on comments here, suppossed to be a direct replacement/fit for a 2001...it is not.
The Duralast is a bit shorter (lengthwise) than stock. Had to make another trip for a universal battery clamp. Otherwise fitment was good.
This is my 3rd battery (57k miles) only lasting about 3 or less years each. I do alot of short trips and it is typically hot (Atlanta). Only mod that may consume more battery is a Phatbox.

Weird...I doubt that the battery mfgs. change the size of their batteries
given the same part number. Chances are that even within the same MY Audi, the mounting brackets, stock batteries may be a bit different.

Most the direct replacement *edit*
comments were for other year cars. My car had an Lish shape battery clamp making the need for a universal clamp. 1) accelerates sulfation
2) evaporates electrolyte
Several things you can do to prolong your battery life:
- charge the new battery when you get it home. Unless you drive for a half hour or more at highway speeds to get home, you'll be amazed at how long it takes to fully charge a "new" battery. They sit on the shelf a long while at the seller's location.
- use a trickle charger to keep the battery at a fairly high level of charge all the time.
- use a trickle charger that does de-sulfation. BatteryMinder is the one I use. I've listed this last because there is some argument about whether de-sulfation really works.
