Differential Issues...input please

My car is at the mechanic now and they are saying there is metal shavings in the differential fluid. Anybody have a clue what would cause this? It is going to cost big money for them just to diagnose this...

Please help...

Just get a new diff and be done with it.

Or, as your name implies, sell the darn thing.

a whole lotta things could cause shavings in there, mostly something developed more play than tolerated, and starting grinding.

in general, wear.

how many miles were on this diff? did it have any previous service? shouldnt have to replace the whole thing for that, might just happen again.

its better to take it apart, find out why its carving itself up and fix the problem

I have 105,000 miles on it. This is the first problem with this. Other than normal stuff, this is the only repair that I have had to do. Of course it couldn't have happened last month while it was still under warranty. Oh well.
