I just got done doing the research for my digital camera... (m)
The best web site out there for info on the cameras is www.dpreview.com. Awesome site! Anyway, I ended up getting a Nikon Coolpix 880. I got a really good deal through Buy.com and paid $550, shipped. More info...what do you mean by great pictures and decent price?
A4s are great cars at a decent price for some people, but not for others.
What are your requirements? Pics for web and email use? Printing regular 4x6 prints or are you blowing up to 8x10? Mostly close up portraits or outdoor scenery?

I 2nd your choice!
The 880 is a great camera, 95% of the features and quality of the 990 but in a compact package. The 990 is generally acknowledged as THE camera to beat.

Love my Sony Cybershot DSCS30, USD$399 now

I have a Sony DSC-F505V. Great camera. It's best feature is a 5X OPTICAL zoom and a Zeiss lens. Probably the best lens on a digicam under $1,000. I think some on-line places have them for about $720-$750. The attached link shows some sample images (not necessarily my test, just some samples).
