do cheap code readers work?

I have been struggling with the same issues...GST are they worth it...
Generic Scan Tools (GST) cost $100-$2k. I find that most GST's can be quite extensive with what OBD codes they give, because they are made for any mom/pop shop and the dealer to quickly diagnos your car. So the emissions are back in spec. I really need something and I bet GST's are better than nothing. The only down fall I see if that depending on how much you spend, is how much you get. Plus some do a better job working with the vehicle bus to catch codes than others. Check out www.scantools.net it's a decent site. Let me know what ideas you have.
