Default driving technique question..

ok.. lets say u r driving your car at about 60mph.. or 100kph.. then suddenly a child runs onto the road.. now.. will you try to stop your car by
1) clutch and brake
2) just brake alone

of course we would try to dodge the kid and probably downshift.. but my question is will combination of clutch and brake shortens the distance? compared to braking alone.

Default no i dont believe clutch and brake would slow you any faster then brake alone. in fact i would....

have to say that assuming you are doing nothing else, brake alone would stop you faster as if you were still in gear the engine would obviously slow you somewhat.

Default My guess:

I think it's pretty much a reflex to step on the clutch before the car comes to a full stop. However, you might forget in a situation like that.
As for the engine assisting in breaking, I don't think so. You'd be probably in 4th or 5the gear at that speed, pratically coasting, and engine drag won't slow you down noticeably.

Default actually, the opposite would be true...

the slowing power of your brakes would be greater than that of the engine, so the engine would actually be working AGAINST your brakes at that point in time. clutch and brake is best way to slow down, or brake with car not in gear.

Default i see what your saying but im not sure i entirely agree...(m)

if anythin i doubt that at that speed/gear the power of the engine would be negligable in either direction so maybe it doesn't matter either way.

Default Its being IN GEAR and braking that slows you the fastest. The engine at high RPM provide resistance.

Which is why heel-toe downshifting is used for corners.

i partly agree with u skabaru.. but this, i do not agree : "or brake with car not in gear".. b/c inertia of geartrain will again work against the breaking power of brakes.. what i agree with u is breaking with clutch and brakes.. =)
