Default DRL

My dealer says that by Monday my new 2001 A4 2.8 quattro will be delivered. I'm very excited.
One of the few things that disappointed me was the lack of Daytime Running Lights (DRL). My previous car had them and I considered them to be a good safety feature. Any suggestions for someway to overcome this?
Thanks,
-Cliff

Default Not to be a smart@$$ but, you could make a habit to turn your lights on...

just like you fasten your seatbelt everytime you get into the car.

My wife just got a new car with DRLs. We want to deactivate the DRL so that we control when the lights are on. There is a sequence to do this, however, I do not know if there is a sequence to activate DRLs if the car did not originally come with it.

Default Do like the Canadians...

There is a simple to follow <a href="https://www.audiworld.com/faq/faq_exterior/000728.shtml">FAQ</a> on how to be able to run your foglights independently of the headlights. The electronics are simple to do, getting the relay back into place is a bit tricky but not impossible. Then just as Canadian cars are equiped to do, you can use your front fogs as DRL's. This is what I do when its dark and overcast, I'm in a tunnel, or on a dangerous stretch of road.

Default Re: DRL

DRLs are Low Beams that are on whenever the vehicle is running. All you have to do is turn on your lights and Viola! just remember to turn them back off when you shut off you car.

Personally, I hate DRL. One reason why I hate DRL is that motorcycle headlights are on all of the time. The only thing that made the motorcycles stand out is now being used by thousands of cars. What happens is people get used seeing cars with DRLs, after a while Cars with DRLs wont stand out at all. The same goes for the Third Brake Light. When cars were forced to use the third brake light, rear end collisions dropped, now 14 years later, rear end collisions are at the same rate that they were in 1984. I doubt very seriously that DRLs are going to stop a dangerous driver from running in to you, or even prevent an accident at all.<p><IMG SRC=" http://home.att.net/~amitch1/images/sigpic.jpg">

Default Not correct, most cars use high beam bulb at low wattage...

as their DRL's to keep the low beam life span to normal range. Even at night you (most likely) use the high-beams infrequently, so using them at low wattage during the day won't drastically reduce their lifespan (at least like having the lows on 24/7 would). HTH.<p><a href="http://www.meniscusdesign.com/a4/ target="_top"">

Default A4's use low beam for DRL...

and it is actually at a lower wattage. However, there is only a really small difference. On newer (99.5 and up?) the fog lights act as the DRL with the parking lights. On certain vehicles, they use the front turn signal lights so they shine amber. I personally think that it's a good safety feature too especially when travelling on a two lane highway. However, it would be nice not to have them on all the time. Some cars turn off the DRL when the handbrake is engaged. I'm sure you can order a relay to replace so that you have DRLs all the time. Otherwise, just turn on your headlights.<p>Henry

Default I like DRLs

We've had DRL on most vehicles here in Canada for a number of years now. DRL continue to help me perceive a vehicle in all types of lighting conditions.

Regarding motorcycles, their lights help me see that something is coming. Whether it is a motorcycle or not may not be the most important fact. But the DRL will allow me to attend to a vehcile, whether it be a motorcycle or a car. That should not compromise the safety of motorcycles, but enhance the visibility of cars as well.

DRL simply bring attention to the vehicle. It isn't a matter of getting used to them.. the light simply draws one's attention. It isn't a matter of getting used to seeing cars with DRLs on and then not noticing it over time. The lights simply make the vehicle more visible.

Sure, you can just turn your lights on.. but most people simply don't or do not know when it would be good to keep them on. It has been shown that DRL increase visibility of a vehicle in all types of lighting conditions. They've been shown to work.. so why not have 'em.<p>Wayne H.
