Default ECU Problems

Wonder if someone might help shed a little light on a problem with my 98 A4 1.8TQM

Car started running rough and stumbling, as if in limp-home mode. No strange exhaust smells or colors, but it's almost as if a cylinder isn't firing, and it's running rough. However, it idles pretty damn near normal.

Hooked up my VAG-COM to find error code:
16989 P0605 Internal Control Module: ROM Test Error

I cleared it, but the car didn't appear to run any better, and the code came back.

Any experience with this or tips? I can't imagine it's good, but would this error cause the car to run like cr*p?

To complicate things, I'm in Auckland, New Zealand (moved here from Arizona last year), and am trying to determine if it's ECU before I contact Neuspeed to try to arrange a replacement.

The chip is a Neuspeed P-Chip T6K03, and has been in the car for almost a year before this began to happen.

Default I'm no expert, but it sounds like the ECU is phucked

Best would be to put in someone else's ECU and see if the problems go away, alas you probably don't have that luxury in NZ.

Any lights lit up on the dashboard?

Default Anything that says "internal control module" or "check sum error" usually means......

bad control module. Sorry, I'd recommend start searching Ebay, audifans, &amp; the AW marketplace. You can also cross-reference to see if there's any other control modules that'll work with your engine.

If the a coilpack was hosed, wouldn't I expect to see some black exhaust, at least on revs? Nothing has changed in that respect....

Default Ignition Amplifier

Don't let them bone you on the install either. It's a plug-n-play part right on top of your fender.

Check the archives for ignition amp and see if that sounds like the same thing.

Default Can I simply use another ECU?

Or do I need to get it matched to my keycode to make the immobilizer happy?

Default bad #2 cylinder

shows 1 for resistance. All others read around 470. Time for a parts run!
