Those make more power because of how the turbo is mounted and how much better the exhaust flow is.

Agreed transverse mounted engines provide more space for front wheel drives

Default Because an extra 7-12 hp isn't as significant to the designers as other layout considerations. If HP

was all that much of a high priority our 1.8t inlines would all come with 225-250 from the factory.

Default It is easier to get rear drive on an inline engine. Typically the tranverse engine cars have front

drive layouts or at least started out that way. In the instance of the Audi front traks it was likely easier to work with front driving the inline layout since the body was already designed for it.

All wheel drive in the transverse layout was a long time in coming to the VAG cars.

Default I've asked this question before and come up with some answers...

I don't think the transverse engine really makes much, if any, more power. There is possibly some extra drivetrain loss from having to take a 90 degree angle from the engine to the axle, but compared to quattro, that is nothing.

The location of the cat under the car versus right up against the turbo does make a difference. Probably 5-10hp on a chipped car. Especially once you go to a larger exhaust(3-inch).

Additionally, they have an EFK, which is probably not the 10hp SPR claims, but probably is a few hp.
The fact that the APR Stage 3 kit only makes a few more horsepower in the Transverse, despite the fact that it includes a larger MAF and a 3" downpipe indicates that transverse engine isn't that much better.
