Default Engine code 16500

Sup guys, this is my first post here. Been ghosting for ages. But I finally had a need to write.

My CEL is flashing. OBD-II code reads 16500. Engine Coolant Temp.Circ Range/Performance.

I'm hoping this is nothing more than the car telling me to change the coolant.

Anyone have an idea how serious or not serious this is?

Default ECT Sensor

Also known as "coolant temp sensor." You can consider this part a maintenance item on these cars. It's cheap, and is easy to fix yourself.

You can drive the car until you fix it - it might just be a little inefficient on fuel until it's replaced.

... when the ECT went bad in my 2.8L V6 (01 A4), the CEL came on solid. I thought if the CEL was flashing, you were supposed to pull over and not drive any further. I reckon I am just confused ... nothing new.

Oops, you know. I can't remember if it was solid or flashing. I just thought they were the same.

Hmmm, it lit up, I pulled over ... hooked up the OBD-II reader. It said 16500, and then I reset it.

If it comes up again, I'll make note if it's solid or flashing.

Thanx for the heads up.

But just in case, what's the difference between flashing and solid?

This is a pretty easy job. It can a bit of a pain to access the sensor depending on your year and engine, but it's not very complicated.

The forum archives have some good technical info if you want to do more diy work - they can take time to search through, but there are a lot of informative and helpful posts - you'll eventually want the link in your browser's toolbar
